Digestion and Detoxification
Every day our bodies are constantly exposed to environmental toxins. These toxins can be found in the air we breathe, cosmetic products, the water we drink, and cleaning products. Hidden toxins can also affect our bodies and can be caused by mold, parasites, and infections. That is a lot for our bodies to process!
Our bodies work to remove these toxins, by a process call detoxification. You may wonder how digestion matters when it comes to detoxification. Optimal digestion is essential for the body to detoxify efficiently. Without the proper digestion of nutrients, our detoxification pathways can become clogged, leading to a build-up of toxins. This build-up of toxins can cause other organs to dysfunction and not perform their jobs correctly.
When the digestive system is not functioning correctly, it will not absorb the required nutrients for detoxification. Important nutrients found in fatty acids, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, and protein, play in an important role in the detoxification process.
Poor fat digestion clogs the lymphatic system, which then affects the liver. When the liver becomes overwhelmed, it then affects the movement of bile. Bile plays an important role in detoxification, as it helps with digestion and waste removal. Bile is released from the common bile duct into you small intestine. Once there, it then goes to work helping to break down fats into fatty acids and helps with the absorption of much-needed nutrients.
The digestive system also aids in detoxification by the process of elimination. Healthy bowel movements are a sign of good digestion and is essential for proper detoxification. On average, we should be having a bowel movement 1-3 times per day. This will ensure the toxins do not remain in our body, where they will continuously circulate and cause havoc.
You can help your digestive system become its healthiest by drinking more water, slowing down when eating, eat fiber-rich foods, and finding time in the day to move your body. Supplements such as magnesium and digestive bitters will also promote better digestion and proper elimination.
